Learning Target: Students will understand the differing governing methods used by the Athenians and the Spartans. Students will be well informed members of society and will be able to formulate educated opinions on global, national, and local issues.

Circle: What is your favorite Halloween costume you've ever had?

World Issues Project: You will have ten minutes to work on your world issues project.

You will draw a two circle Venn Diagram on your papers. You will be taking ten minutes to read the sections on Athens and Sparta. While doing so you should try to put as much information into your Venn Diagrams as possible.

Athenians Build a Democracy: We will be discussing what the Athenian Democracy looked like. We will be going over gender roles in Ancient Greece as well as the difference between a Direct and Representative Democracy.

Sparta Builds an Army: We will be looking at the very contrasting structure of Spartan society. How were gender roles different in Sparta? How was the government different or the same?

Similar to Today? You will now be doing some research to find some countries that have a structure similar to Athens and a structure similar to Sparta. Do we find any near perfect matches?

Homework: For homework you will be reading Chapter 5 Section 3 as well as reading the end of Section 2 that we did not get to about Persian Wars. You should be taking notes while reading... Next class we will be going over these readings.

Mycenaean Trade: For homework, you read that through contact with the Minoans, the Mycenaean's discovered the value of seaborne trade. Now it's time to research. What resources do you think Mycenaean's would have been lacking? What goods could they have used to trade? What goods could they have gotten from trading partners? In your groups, come up with a list of imports and exports for the Mycenaean. For imports, try to find it specifically what trade partner it would have come from. Hint: You may have to make assumptions based off what the physical environment of these different places consists of. (Fifteen minutes then share out lists)

Questions to Ponder: We will be answering and discussing questions number 6, 7, and 8 from the end of the section.
Steps:
1- 3 minutes to write down your own individual answer.
2- 3 minutes to discuss answers in groups.
3- One person share out what their group discussed to the class.

Writing: How did the Mycenaean and Minoan cultures influence our culture today? Why do you think the story and controversy of the Trojan war is important? Why was it worth learning?

Free Work Time: There should be time at the end of class for free work time. This is so anyone who needs to finish up their Human/Environment essays can have a chance to do so. Anyone who has finished these can use this time to get ahead in their world issues projects or their reading for next class.

Thursday October 25, 2018

Learning Target: Students will be well informed members of society and will be able to formulate educated opinions on global, national, and local issues. Students will understand that Ancient Greece consisted of individual city-states that traded with each other as well as with neighboring civilizations.

Circle: What would your ideal vacation look like?

World Issues: You will have 15 minutes to work on your world issues projects.

Greek City-States: We will start off by figuring out what a city-state is. From there, we will be doing a team building exercise that illustrates the trading the Ancient Greeks did.

Your goal is to use the materials at your disposal to build the tallest standing tower your group can. At the same time, you must also build the strongest bridge between two desks that you can. The winner of each challenge is awarded 3 points, second place 2, and third place 1.

There will be three Greek City-States and three trade partners of those city-states.

The Steps:
1- You must choose your government. Will you be a Monarchy (1 of your group members makes all the decisions), an Oligarchy (2 members of your group make all the decisions), or a Direct Democracy (all your group members have equal voice, majority rules all decisions).

2- Once you choose your government, you are ready to start building.

3- Remember, you only have materials that your environment offers. If you want other supplies you will need to trade with other city-states or over seas trade partners. If trading, the group member who is going to do the trading must wait 1 minute (and can not contribute to the group) for a trade with a fellow city-state. If trading with an overseas trade partner, you must wait two minutes.

You have 25 minutes to complete this task!

Human/Environment Essays: If time allows you will have a chance to work on edits to your essays for the remainder of class.

Homework: Textbook chapter 5 section 1. Read and take notes. Notes MUST be less than a page... shoot for a half a page or less.... be concise!

Sox in 4: We will be looking at a sample claim, evidence, warrant paragraph.
Step 1: 5 minutes to color code the paragraph individually
